DEEP SEA World has launched an investigation after a diver was bitten by an angel shark at the weekend.
The 23-year-old member of staff sustained 15 to 20 cuts, each around one centimetre long, to his hand and arm in the attack.
The diver was in the main ocean display with the angel shark—otherwise known as a monkfish—at the North Queensferry attraction when the incident happened on Saturday afternoon.
He was treated by paramedics who dressed the puncture wounds on his hand and arm. He did not need to go to hospital, the Scottish Ambulance Service said.
Deep Sea World, which has been participating in European Shark Week which ended yesterday, issued a statement which confirmed a member of staff had received an injury while diving in the aquarium’s main ocean display.
“A full investigation is currently being carried out into the incident,” the statement added.
Angel sharks are flat and look similar to skates and rays.
They are usually around five feet long and normally lie in wait on the seabed before attacking prey.
