Wartime memories

WARTIME memories were evoked yesterday for a Fife veteran who recently celebrated his 102nd birthday.

An exhibition looking at wartime Fife through children’s eyes was brought to St Serf’s Home in Newport by Fife Council’s Museum and Arts Coach.

Major Bill Shepherd was among residents who toured the Blackouts, Bombs And Bananas display.

At the outbreak of war he was a staff sergeant in the Royal Corps of Signals, having signed up in 1925. An expert at laying cables, he risked his life on the eve of the D-Day landings to identify a fault in a submarine cable. His service earned him a mention in dispatches.

The exhibition is on an 18th-month tour, including schools, colleges, and residential homes.
