Inmates in prison drinking session

THREE PRISONERS were transferred out of Castle Huntly after they indulged in a drink-fuelled spree at the open prison near Dundee last week.

However, open estate governor Mike Inglis said reports that the trio had rampaged through part of the prison, causing thousands of pounds worth of criminal damage, had been greatly exaggerated.

“The damage was very insignificant and there was no lasting damage,” he added.

Mr Inglis said the prisoners had placed something in a microwave, which had triggered the fire alarm.

However, by the time staff reached it, there was no fire. His staff had dealt with the incident extremely quickly, he continued.

The men involved had been breathalysed, giving positive results, and when it was confirmed they had been drinking they were returned to closed conditions.
