Couple’s 70 years together

Mrs and Mrs Greenhill.

CARNOUSTIE COUPLE George and Ann Greenhill celebrated 70 years of married life at their home yesterday.

The couple were married by the Rev D. M. Bell in Forfar Old Parish Church on November 18, 1939, having met while they were working at Whitehills Hospital.

Mr Greenhill (95) was born at Careston, near Brechin, and was educated at Forfar East School and Forfar Academy.

On leaving school he went to work for Callander Contractors as a lorry driver for 18 years but when the business was nationalised, took up the position of caretaker/handyman at Whitehills Hospital.

After 17 years there he was transferred to Arbroath Infirmary, working as a stoker/porter until his retirement in 1979.

A keen road-racing cyclist since 1932, he is still a familiar figure on the roads around Carnoustie on his Flying Scot machine.

Mrs Greenhill (92) was born in Forfar and brought up in Carnoustie where her late father, David Auchterlonie, had a painting business.

She was a nurse at Whitehills when she met Mr Greenhill and went back into the service after bringing up son George, who sadly died four years ago, and daughter Sandra.

The couple have four grandchildren—Lynn, Lorna, James and Alison.
