Winds batter city

Firefighters make safe a shop sign damaged by high winds.

DUNDEE IS set for a more settled outlook weather-wise today, following the hurricane force winds which battered the city yesterday.

The Met Office’s forecast predicts that there will be no more rain for the next few days and wind will reach a high of 37mph.

Traffic trying to cross the Tay Road Bridge was restricted during yesterday’s morning rush hour, as wind speeds jumped from 50 mph to 80mph.

The bridge was closed to all but cars and single decker buses just after 8am when gusts whipped the estuary.

Reports also came in of waves from the River Tay splashing up onto Riverside Drive.

Meanwhile, part of Dock Street was closed to allow unstable scaffolding to be assessed.

There were concerns for safety when a lamp post on the A90 dual carriageway on the outskirts of the city was wrenched from its base and left flapping by a cable.

However, things had calmed down a bit by last night.

Police said that, while they had dealt with reports of minor flooding on some roads, there were no “major” problems.
