Interesting few weeks ahead of Saints in top six race

Interesting few weeks ahead of Saints in top six race

The league split has had its fair share of critics since it was introduced, but at least it’s making things exciting for those trying to secure a spot in that top half.

Saints and Killie certainly fall into that category, with hopes of European qualification all but mathematically gone yet the prospect of being sucked into a relegation dogfight non-existent.

Mid-table mediocrity it is not, however, and the race for that potentially lucrative sixth place is certainly beginning to heat up.

Most Saints fans will probably be looking to that all-important home game against rivals Dundee on April 11 as the clincher, but it’s the Perth club’s form on the road between then and now that will ultimately decide whether or not they are still in the hunt.

A home match against St Mirren aside, four of Saints’ remaining six fixtures before the split are away from McDiarmid Park and they are all tough in their own way.

I don’t usually rush to give the SPFL credit where it’s due, but the quirks of the league format mean that Celtic, Partick, Hamilton and Ross County are all likely to have something to play for.

And that means an intriguing if nerve-wracking six weeks or so ahead for Saints supporters.
