Dundee deserved share of spoils despite dubious penalty award

Kane Hemmings.
Kane Hemmings.

It is not often you will hear opposing managers singing from the same hymn sheet about a disputed penalty but Dundee’s Paul Hartley and Motherwell’s Mark McGhee were in perfect harmony agreeing that the home side should not have been awarded a late spot-kick on Saturday.

At the time, it did appear to be in the “soft” category and on subsequent viewing, that has been confirmed and more.

However, the Dark Blues and in-form hitman Kane Hemmings were not going to look the proverbial gift horse in the mouth and there was certainly no doubting his finish to ensure Dundee shared the spoils.

Overall, it was no more than Paul Hartley’s men deserved on the balance of play and chances created.

The manager though will no doubt be unhappy with the goals his side conceded, especially the second where Stephen Pearson ghosted past some non-existent defending before firing past home goalie Scott Bain.

Dundee though deserve a lot of credit for fighting back not once but twice in the game and there were plenty of other plus points.

Paul McGowan took his goal really well and overall was the most effective I have seen him for a while and it was good to see Rory Loy back in the starting line-up again.

The Dark Blues have a break from league business when they go to Dumbarton on Scottish Cup duty this weekend and they showed enough on Saturday to believe they can comfortably negotiate their way into the next round.
