Food for thought for Dundee United boss

Jackie McNamara.
Jackie McNamara.

Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara certainly has much to ponder ahead of next week’s eagerly-awaited League Cup semi-final against Aberdeen.

The manager had been less than happy with his players’ lacklustre performance at St Mirren last Wednesday night and it was almost certain he would freshen up his starting XI for the Motherwell match.

It was though still a surprise when the team sheets were handed out before kick-off to see that there were no less than seven changes from the Buddies encounter.

McNamara has not been afraid to shuffle his pack this season but it was a move that could have backfired with so many players having to quickly gel.

However, after a frustrating first half, United finally began to click with Charlie Telfer’s opener settling any nerves.

The former Rangers youngster has definitely played his way into the manager’s thoughts courtesy of his two goals and all-round play and there were others who put their hands up for possible selection at Hampden such as Blair Spittal and Aidan Connolly.

It would though be a surprise if the Tangerines boss did not largely revert to the tried and trusted with the likes of John Rankin, Paul Paton, Nadir Ciftci and Gary Mackay-Steven coming back in for the semi-final.

However, after Saturday’s result, no-one will be taking their place for granted.
