Positives for both bosses after Tayside derby

Saints boss Tommy Wright.
Saints boss Tommy Wright.

The respective managers may have differed in terms of who was the happier on Saturday night.

However, while Paul Hartley was delighted his side held on to secure all three points, there were also positives for Tommy Wright to take in defeat.

From a Dark Blue perspective, there were success stories all over the pitch.

Once again, Scott Bain produced another stunning save, following on from his world-class stop against Dundee United last Tuesday and won the man-of-the-match award.

Arguably though, that prize should have gone to Nicky Low.

The former Aberdeen midfielder provided two assists for the Dundee goals and his overall play was superb throughout.

He rightly received a great ovation from the fans when he was substituted in the 74th minute.

For St Johnstone, Wright was less than pleased with the way the two Dundee goals were conceded, describing some of the defending, especially at Kane Hemmings’ second as “criminal”.

Saints will no doubt be working hard on those failings at training this week but on the plus side, the Perth side definitely possess a goal threat.

Graham Cummins is probably still scratching his head this morning wondering just how Bain managed to get fingertips to his goalbound shot but the former Exeter striker looks a valuable addition to the Saints team while Michael O’Halloran’s pace will cause defences all over Scotland problems.

It is still early days but there are signs that St Johnstone will soon be back to winning ways and climbing the league table.
