The only way is up for super Saints

Tommy Wright.
Tommy Wright.

The Saints go marching on . . . yes, there really is no stopping Tommy Wright’s side at the moment.

The win at Tannadice was their fifth on the bounce and cemented their place in fourth spot in the Premiership.

The Perth side should now have Aberdeen and Hearts firmly in their sights if they can keep this fantastic run going.

They may not have been at their best against United but St Johnstone did what they always do worked incredibly hard to secure the right result.

They were without Simon Lappin, Liam Craig and Graham Cummins but once again, Wright used his squad to the full to counter the Tangerines.

I thought Chris Kane ensured Cummins wasn’t missed too much. The striker took his goal well but his overall play was noteworthy and he proved a real handful for the home defence throughout.

United are also deserving of plaudits in defeat with Wright acknowledging: “It’s as good as I’ve seen them this season.”

There were certainly lots of positives for boss Mixu Paatelainen to take from the game including the 90-minute performance of the returning Gavin Gunning.

However, the big Finn who employed a 3-4-2-1 formation against Saints will know there is still work to be done defensively to cut out the cheap goals they conceded on Saturday and in attack where they have to find a way to supply more ammunition to the dangerous Billy Mckay.
