Former Rangers star Ian Black training with Raith Rovers

Raith boss Ray McKinnon has admitted he is a big admirer of former Hearts and Rangers star Ian Black.

The midfielder, who left Ibrox at the end of last season, has been in training with Rovers this week.

Black, who is 30, is certain to be on the radar of several clubs but McKinnon would not be drawn on whether Raith was one of them.

The manager said: “Ian has been in training with us this week after we agreed to give him the use of our facilities.

“He is a player I like who has performed at the highest level and he has looked good.

“However, at the moment he is just in training with us.”

Meanwhile, McKinnon has warned his players they could end up being the victims of a big upset if they treat Albion Rovers lightly in the League Cup tomorrow.

The Cliftonhill side won promotion last season from League Two and have added a few new faces including the likes of former Ross County, Inverness and Dunfermline striker Andy Barrowman this summer.

Which is why McKinnon regards the tie as a potential banana skin, especially as his side have already slipped up in a pre-season friendly against League Two neighbours East Fife.

He said: “I was just saying that to the boys.

“You only have to look at the East Fife game.

“We have to be tuned in as they will have nothing to lose. They are a league below us but they have been promoted so it will be a tough game.

“They have signed some right good players such as Andy Barrowman so they are a decent side and we will have to be on the ball and not treat them lightly.

“I think every club would benefit financially from a good cup run and Raith Rovers are the same.

“The club hasn’t budgeted for that so if we get one it will be a big bonus for us.

“I would also like a cup run, to play up there against the likes of Dundee United and Celtic.”

McKinnon will be without three key players because of injury for the game with the manager adding: “Mitch Megginson has a groin strain, Lewis Toshney has done his ligaments but thankfully there is no break.

“Craig Barr is out long-term.

“However, Darren Petrie is back fit. He just took the skin off his knee and it was taking a while to heal but he is fine now.”

McKinnon has decided not to pursue his interest in striker JJ Hooper who had been on trial with Raith.
