Adam Rooney punished Dundee once again as they passed up the chance to move into fifth in the Premiership.
The Irishman slid the ball into the net at the back post on 14 minutes to secure a 1-0 win for Aberdeen at Pittodrie.
How the Dark Blues must hate the sight of Rooney.
He has now scored four times against them this season, not to mention the two he got in the previous campaign.
The result was disappointing for Paul Hartley’s sixth-placed men, who had hoped to move above Ross County with victory in the Granite City.
In truth, though, the Dons were about more than just Rooney and deserved to close the gap on leaders Celtic to three points.
Dundee were unchanged from the team that started like lightning against Partick Thistle last Saturday.
Gary Harkins skippered the side once again and they also had their new Spanish striker Arturo cheering them on from the stand.
The Dens men were bidding to make it three wins in a row for the first time since October-November of 2014, when they overcame Motherwell, Hamilton and Kilmarnock.
The hosts were without the suspended Mark Reynolds, who was replaced at the heart of the defence by Andrew Considine.
The wind was swirling around Pittodrie and it caused problems for home goalie Scott Brown early on when a straightforward passback from Ash Taylor was caught by a gust and he had to boot it out of play.
Up at the other end, the Dark Blues had keeper Scott Bain to thank for a series of great saves.
On six minutes, a poor header back from Dundee’s Thomas Konrad set up Rooney right in front of goal but the Dens number one somehow got his legs in the way of the strike.
With Aberdeen winning corner after corner, Bain then did brilliantly to block two shots in quick succession from Taylor.
Having survived that onslaught, the Dark Blues had a chance themselves when Kane Hemmings sprinted forward, only for the frontman to shoot right at Brown.
It was all action and Harkins just missed a Nicky Low cutback by a toe’s length before Aberdeen took the lead on 14 minutes.
Jonny Hayes produced some trickery on the right before getting a break of the ball and squaring to the back post, where Rooney was lurking to slide in his 16th goal of the season despite Bain desperately trying to claw the ball out of his net.
Dundee were getting caught out trying to play offside too often and David Goodwillie should have done better than pull his shot side of the far post when in plenty of space.
Taylor was trying his damnedest to score and headed a corner past the post on 29 minutes then Dundee came close to scoring themselves five minutes later.
When a high ball was played into the Dons’ box by Konrad, striker Hemmings showed terrific technique to catch it on the volley. Brown got down to save the strike and Taylor cleared the loose ball.
Paul McGowan was booked for fouling Hayes then Bain came to the rescue again just before the break when he scooped the ball away after Taylor directed another corner goalwards.
Dundee restarted brightly and a Harkins pass into the box was just a wee bit too heavy for Greg Stewart on 47 minutes.
There was a well-deserved yellow card for Shay Logan when his high boot caught Kevin Holt in the head. The Dundee defender needed stiches to a nasty cut and was replaced by Cammy Kerr.
Hayes was causing havoc as Aberdeen camped in the Dundee half, with O’Dea, Stewart and sub Kerr all called on to clear before crosses became goals.
On 59 minutes, it should have been 2-0 to Aberdeen but Rooney somehow blasted his shot over from just a couple of yards out and the visitors could breathe a sigh of relief.
It would have been level if the ball had fallen more kindly for Dundee’s Nicky Low on 66 minutes after a mistake by Taylor but Logan nipped in to block.
Rooney, however, could have grabbed another for Aberdeen on 84 minutes when he was just an inch away from sub Cammy Smith’s cutback.
Hartley’s side then almost had the laugh with a shot from Harkins but Brown was equal to it, before the Dundee captain hooked a corner over from close range in stoppage-time.
