Dundee’s title hopes are out of their hands after a crushing defeat to bottom of the league Morton.

With two games left the Dark Blues now trail Hamilton by a point and must hope that the Accies slip up.

They had their chances at Greenock but were far from impressive and certainly didn’t look like champions-elect on this showing.

Ironically, the winning goal was scored by ex-Hamilton man Dougie Imrie.

You wouldn’t have known the length of the table divided these two teams in a tight and tense first half.

It wasn’t until the 23rd minute that the Morton goal was threatened when keeper Derek Gaston threw out his right foot to turn a Peter MacDonald volley past the near post.

On the half-hour mark it looked like Nicky Riley was about to put Dundee ahead, but just as he was pulling the trigger Stuart Findlay timed a sliding tackle perfectly.

MacDonald slipped a quick free-kick through the middle for strike-partner Craig Wighton. The youngster got to the ball first but Gaston was on his toes and rushed out to thwart him.

Morton broke straight up the pitch and, with Dundee claiming offside to no avail, Rowan Vine skied his shot over the bar.

With only a minute on the clock after the re-start, MacDonald made a poor connection from an excellent shooting position. Then seconds latter Wighton dragged a shot just past the far post.

Dundee were starting to build some momentum and MacDonald had his best chance yet on 54 minutes, but couldn’t get the ball past Gaston from eight yards after Declan Gallagher had cushioned a header into his path.

Christian Nade came on for Wighton midway through the second half and could have made himself a Dundee hero.

On 65 minutes he took the ball round the keeper but, after doing the hard bit, missed the target with his shot.

On 77 minutes Tade was given a lesson in clinical finishing when Morton took the lead. Vine cut the ball back for Imrie who slotted the ball high past Kyle Letheren.

Fouad Bachirou nearly made it two on 82 minutes, but his shot was well saved by Letheren and a rebound off Willie Dyer drifted just past the post.

Dundee made a late bid to snatch an equaliser but the closest they came was a MacDonald shot deflected just past the post.
