Former Dundee and Raith star Iain Davidson weighing up new club options

Former Raith and Dundee favourite Iain Davidson has revealed there has been interest in him from League Two sides down south and in Scotland including from Rovers’ local rivals Dunfermline.

The 31-year-old was released by the Dark Blues at the end of last season and has been on the look-out for a new club since.

Like several other free agents last week, he took part in a PFA Scotland “Player Showcase” at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld.

The players involved were given career advice along with training under coaches Andy Barrowman and Richie Brittain with an “Exit” game held on Saturday in front of a host of managers from around the country, eager to snap up the talent on show.

Former Raith skipper Davidson had previously been invited to train with Dunfermline by Pars boss Allan Johnston but he has also had interest from three clubs in England’s League Two and he hopes to hear back from them by the end of this week.

Davidson said: “I spoke to Michelle Evans at the PFA last week, mostly about career advice after I had stopped playing.

“She said why not come in for the week and to be honest, there is only so much training and running you can do on your own, so I was happy to do so.

“It was really good and we would combine training with being given talks. For instance, on the Tuesday, it was a company showing us how to write CVs and we also had the police coming in to tell us about a career with them.

“Then later in the week, Andy Barrowman and Richie Brittain asked if I wanted to take part in the game between all the lads on the Saturday.

“I thought, why not, as you never know who might be watching.

“It was a great week and I was also happy to pass on some advice to the younger lads.

“I have a few clubs after me at the moment and I have been in training at Dunfermline.

“Allan Johnston is keen to sign me and I only live 15 minutes along the road.

“However, I have told him that there has also been interest from League Two clubs in England and I hope to hear by the end of this week whether there is a chance of going to one of them.

“The money on offer is a lot more than what I could expect in Scotland so Allan understands why I am holding off.

“I also have offers from Championship clubs and League One here so I have a lot to consider before making a final decision.”

Davidson was a key player as Dundee secured promotion two seasons ago but he only turned out 14 times in the last campaign for Paul Hartley’s side.

He admits it was not a great shock when he was released but he insists he holds no grudges about the way his time ended at Dens.

Davidson added: “I kind of expected it, to be honest.

“I didn’t play much last season and Paul had brought in his own players.

“I had really enjoyed my time with Dundee. They are a big club and the fans were always really good with me.

“I was also pleased that I had played my part helping them get back to where they belong by winning promotion to the Premiership.

“However, it is all about playing so last season was frustrating for me.

“I hold no grudges about what happened though, it is just part of football.”
