Former Dundee boss Barry Smith taking over at Aldershot Town

Former Dundee and Alloa manager Barry Smith will be announced as the manager of English Vanarama Conference Premier side Aldershot Town this afternoon.

The 41-year-old spent the last week finalising his full time contract and having discussions with the club’s stand-in player-manager Chris Barker.

Smith guided the Dark Blues on a 25 game unbeaten run after they had been placed in administration in 2010 and ensured that they stayed up despite a 25-point penalty for their financial troubles.

Dundee were then elevated to the top flight in 2012 when they took the place of Rangers.

Smith, who spent most of his playing career at Dundee, parted company with the club in February 2013.

He then joined Ross County as their U-20s manager until he took over at the Wasps in January 2014 and kept them in the Championship on the final day last season.

Despite guiding the Indodrill Stadium side to the Petrofac Training Cup final, Smith felt that another manager deserved the opportunity to keep Alloa in the Championship with former St Mirren manager Danny Lennon appointed to the position earlier this month.

Aldershot, who sit 18th place in the 24-team conference, have had Barker in temporary charge since February and after keeping the Shots, who were relegated from the Football League at the end of the 201213 season, in the Conference he is expected to be named as Smith’s assistant.

A source at Aldershot said: “With the season now complete, the board will announce on Monday the new management team for next season.”
