Morton v Dundee: Hosts still a threat despite relegation, warns Hartley

Dundee manager Paul Hartley expects a tough clash at Cappielow.
Dundee manager Paul Hartley expects a tough clash at Cappielow.

Dundee manager Paul Hartley is not convinced that Morton’s relegation will make it any easier for his team to beat them.

The Greenock side were condemned to life in League One last weekend after losing 2-0 to Alloa.

However, instead of much of the fight going out of the hosts at Cappielow, Hartley feels it might free them up to play well against his title-chasing team.

“It is another tough game for us and that hasn’t changed just because Morton have been relegated,” said the Dens boss.

“It is never easy going to Cappielow, and because of what’s happened they might just express themselves with a little bit of freedom.

“We know it will be difficult and the players have been well warned not to expect anything less.

“Morton will want to put on a good show in front of their own fans and there will be players trying for contracts or whatever.

“We can’t be complacent and our attitude has to be spot-on. The lads are really motivated, however, and have shown good desire.

“Both our concentration and focus have to be excellent if we are going to win this game. It is all about keeping it going after our win over Cowdenbeath.

“There was good energy and pace in our team last weekend. We were really positive and had real intensity in our play.

“It is about keeping your nerve in these games and not looking too far ahead. It is about our attitude between now and the end of the season and it must be spot-on.”

Hartley is hoping that as many supporters as possible make the journey west to see if Dundee can take another significant step towards the title after edging two points clear of Hamilton Accies with just three games to go.

“I am sure we will have another good support and the backing we have had away from home has been terrific,” he said.

“We are relying on them to help us again because it is always encouraging for the players to go to an away ground and see your fans there in numbers.”

Hartley will welcome back Gary Irvine from suspension, while Craig Beattie has taken a knock on the shin and Steven Doris has a stomach bug.

An upbeat Hartley said: “On the whole I would say we are looking really healthy at the moment and that’s great at such a crucial stage of the season.”
