New Dundee contract for ‘exceptional young talent’ Craig Wighton

Dundee’s teenage star Craig Wighton signed a new contract with the club, minutes after scoring his first SPFL Premiership goal to secure a draw against Partick Thistle at Dens on Saturday.

The new deal will secure his future at the club until at least the summer of 2017.

Wighton came off the substitutes bench at the start of the second half and immediately made an impact, linking up with strike partner Peter McDonald before slotting the ball past Thistle keeper Scott Fox.

The game ended 1-1 and Wighton’s impressive performance saw him being voted man of the match.

Last season Wighton became the club’s youngest ever goal scorer when he netted against Raith Rovers in the SPFL Championship and only turned 17 last month.

At the age of 16, he broke into the first team during the Championship-winning season last year after impressive displays for the Dundee reserve side. He played a total of 14 times, scoring twice for the first team.

His form had already seen him involved with the Scotland under-17 team and he was called up for the UEFA under-17s European Championships in Malta during the summer, helping the young Scots progress as far as the semi-finals.

Managing director John Nelms said: “We are pleased that Craig has pledged his future to Dundee FC. He is an exceptional young talent with match maturity beyond his years.

“We have agreed with Craig and his family the long-term plan for his development which will give Craig the best opportunity to have a long and prosperous career at the highest level in football.

“Craig is a credit to the club and is a beacon that all of our academy players should strive to follow.”

Manager Paul Hartley added: “I’m delighted to tie him up for the next three years. We think he’s the future of the club, we can only see him improving and getting better.

“For somebody at 17, he’s got the world at his feet and he can become a top player.”
