Paul Hartley expects Phil Roberts to make a quick impact at Dundee

Phil Roberts made his competitive debut for Dundee against Raith Rovers.
Phil Roberts made his competitive debut for Dundee against Raith Rovers.

Dundee boss Paul Hartley believes Phil Roberts’ pace will add an extra dimension to his side.

The former Falkirk flyer enjoyed what was his first start for five months against Raith Rovers on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old really hit the ground running following his enforced absence after picking up a four-game ban at the end of last season.

He tormented the Rovers’ rearguard and now, as unbeaten Dundee face their biggest test of the season so far with the visit of champions Celtic to Dens on Sunday, Hartley is relishing having the Roberts option at his disposal.

Hartley said: “I thought for being out for such a long time that Roberts was excellent.

“He hasn’t played since March in terms of first-team games because of his suspension and leaving Falkirk at the time.

“I think he can trouble most defences with that kind of pace and the way he attacks full-backs.

“I thought he took to the game really well. That was really pleasing for me.

“His pace in the wider area caused Raith all sorts of problems. He is always a threat and it’s another dimension to our team.

“He’s another option for us in terms of he’s a threat in behind. He can get the game squeezed up which is what we’re looking for.”
