Aberdeen 0 Dundee United 3: Stylish Tangerines to remain grounded

Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara insisted no one will be getting too excited despite a brilliant start to the new season.

The Tangerines triumphed 3-0 over Aberdeen at Pittodrie to kick off the new Scottish Premiership campaign in scintillating style.

They took the lead through Ryan Dow on 29 minutes, Gary Mackay-Steven made it 2-0 just before half-time then substitute Chris Erskine added a third goal a minute into stoppage time.

It was their first success at the home of the Dons in almost five years but McNamara offered a note of caution to add to the

celebrations of the large travelling support.

“It is a good start for us and I don’t think many people would have seen that result (coming) today,” said McNamara.

“However, we are not getting carried away because it’s only three points.

“We have a hard game against Motherwell on Wednesday night and I noticed they got a great result on Saturday (they beat St Mirren) so it will be tough.”

While the goals were celebrated in style, the United fans also had fun cheering loudly every time either of the central defenders, Jarek Fojut or Callum Morris, cleared the lines with a commanding header to ease the pressure when Aberdeen attacked.

Indeed, the solidity of the backline was as satisfying for the manager as the clinical forward play.

McNamara added: “There were a lot of pleasing things about that display, including a clean sheet, the fact we looked defensively solid and our threat going forward.

“As an ex-defender I wanted to address that (the backline) from last season.

“We have had pace and power in attack and you could see that again today, but the defensive side was a worry.

“Certain teams punished us last year but I thought we looked solid.

“Not only were we winning headers, the players were getting distance on them and not just going a few yards.”

Disappointed Dons boss Derek McInnes, meanwhile, admitted he should have freshened up his side after their tough Europa League defeat to Real Sociedad on Thursday night.

“One of the teams you don’t want to play against when you have a lack of energy about you is United,” he said.

“I think I possibly should have made more changes to the starting line-up.

“First and foremost, though, United deserved the victory and took advantage of a bad mistake from us for the first goal.

“We were then chasing the game and it suits United when they go in front in games.”
