Best is yet to come, Ciftci promises Dundee United fans

Nadir Ciftci's link play up front caught the eye on Sunday.

Dundee United frontman Nadir Ciftci has promised he will get better the more he plays for the Tangerines.

The Dutch-born Turk had his best game for the club since signing in the summer as United defeated Ross County 4-2 in Dingwall on Sunday.

As well as grabbing his side’s fourth goal he held the ball up well, ran the County defence ragged and created openings aplenty for the likes of Ryan Gauld, Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven.

Ciftci was not content to merely reflect upon a job well done, though.

Instead, he sent out a message to the Tangerines’ supporters to expect extra from him with every game that passes.

“I have made a good start to my United career but there is more to come from me,” Ciftci said. “Every day when I train and in every match I play I develop further as a player.

“I am progressing all the time. Since I have been here I haven’t played up top in attack yet, going either to the left or the right, so I enjoyed being an out-and-out striker against Ross County.

“I am so grateful to the other boys for being really helpful, and the coaches have been great, too. We have a really young team but we understand each other really well and I am loving being a part of that.”

Of course, Gauld has grabbed a lot of the headlines for his display in Dingwall and Ciftci, even considering his background in the respected academies of the Netherlands, has been impressed by the Tannadice teenager.

“Ryan is an extremely talented player for someone aged only 17,” Ciftci added. “He is just one of a few here at United and is proof that Scotland does produce good young players.

“You can also talk about John Souttar, Stuart Armstrong, Andrew Robertson and Keith Watson in that way.”

It is no surprise the United players have had a spring in their collective step this week in training.

They were simply too good and fast for the Staggies in the final third of the pitch and will be desperate to reproduce such attacking menace when Motherwell visit Tannadice on Sunday.

Ciftci said: “It is all positive at the club just now and hopefully we can continue like this. We feel fantastic after that Ross County game.

“We would have been feeling even better had we not had the two goals against us but overall we have to be delighted with both the result and the performance.

“We looked back at the game on DVD and watching it again made me think that we could easily have scored six.

“For example, I had a chance that I should have done better with when the keeper saved and Ryan Gauld missed the rebound.”

Ciftci revealed he has a number one fan in the form of former Celtic striker Pierre van Hooijdonk.

He said: “Pierre watched the game on TV and called me afterwards for a chat about it. He was really pleased for me and it was nice to think he was watching and urging me to play well.

“He also contacted me after the Celtic match recently and we talked things over and I appreciate his advice.”
