Different Dundee United heading to Hamilton this time, insists Scott Fraser

Scott Fraser celebrates after scoring against Partick.

Scott Fraser could only watch helplessly from the bench as Dundee United suffered a hammering at Hamilton the last time they visited New Douglas Park.

It was a horrible experience for the Tangerines, who went down 4-0 without putting up any kind of fight against the Accies.

In a dismal campaign for United at least thus far, that result ranks among their worst.

Today, though, they have a chance to exorcise the ghosts of August 15 and really make the teams above them sit up and take notice.

Mixu Paatelainen’s men go into this afternoon’s Premiership clash in, arguably, the best shape they have been in all season thanks to back-to-back wins over Kilmarnock in the league and Partick Thistle in the Scottish Cup.

The 1-0 victory over the Jags last weekend came courtesy of a wonderful winning goal from Fraser and he hopes United can banish some of the bad memories from that previous trip to Hamilton.

“I think there is a big difference between us then and now,” insisted Fraser.

“I feel the manager has put his style of play into the team and there have been a few changes in terms of players.

“My plan is to start and help us win the match.

“The celebration after I scored against partick Thistle showed just how much it meant to the team.

“It was massive.

“The game wasn’t much of a spectacle but to come on and get that one chance and score was a great feeling for me and all the boys.

“The gaffer put me on last week with the hope of getting a chance and winning the game and thankfully that’s what happened.

“It has been frustrating to be on the bench, particularly when I have been so used to playing this season.

“Previously when I have dropped out of the side I have managed to get back in and hopefully I will be able to do the same again.

“The manager has told me that if I am playing behind the striker there is more to it than my just getting on the ball.

“It is up to me to make runs in behind and to get into goalscoring opportunities just like I did last weekend.

“Most of my game at the start of the season was about getting on the ball but I need to do the off-the-ball stuff, too, and get on the end of chances.

“I am taking that advice from the gaffer and hopefully he sees that and that helps me.”

United boss Paatelainen, meanwhile, is not getting carried away despite enjoying successive successes over Thistle and Killie.

“Even if we win this game we would still have a long way to go,” he said.

“But that is our aim, although it won’t be easy because Hamilton have good players, are tricky and have a lot of pace.

“They have power at the back and a new formation, so they are not conceding goals.”

The Tangerines are still trying to shake off the virus that has swept through the club.

Paatelainen confirmed: “We still have a few players suffering from the flu.

“That has been two weeks now and there are some new guys who have it.

“So we are not 100% but we will be fine and hopefully some of them will make it.

“We had players last week who hadn’t trained much because of it but were able to play, so I think this time it will be a similar story.”
