Dundee United a ‘wee bit rusty’ in attack, says McNamara

Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara felt his side were a “wee bit rusty” when it came to finishing but was still satisfied with their opening pre-season game against Athlone Town.

The match in Ireland may have finished goalless United striker Brian Graham was particularly guilty of missing several chances but McNamara saw enough in an experimental display to be pleased about.

“We should have scored a number of goals but it was still a good exercise,” said the Tannadice gaffer.

“We were a wee bit rusty in the last third after creating a few one-on-ones with the goalkeeper.

“Big Brian could have had four or five (goals) at least. Overall, I was really impressed with quite a few things. For example, young Blair Spittal looks a player, doesn’t he?

“I was really pleased with his first contribution, while Callum Morris did well, had a turn of pace and was dominant in the air.

“Charlie Telfer also kept the ball well and had a few good bits about his play. There was a lot there for us and everything was OK up to the last third really.”

Meanwhile, United have been left bemused by reports indicating that they have shown fresh interest in signing Mansfield central defender Ryan Tafazolli.

They did have an offer for the player rejected last week but have not gone back in for Tafazolli.
