Dundee United boss hails his five-star performers

Jackie McNamara has had plenty to applaud in recent weeks, with goals coming from throughout his squad.

Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara has expressed his delight that there are “high fives” all round at Tannadice this season.

Five players have hit the same number of goals so far in this campaign, including attacking foursome Gary Mackay-Steven, Ryan Gauld, Nadir Ciftci and Stuart Armstrong.

However, it is the fifth player to achieve the feat who has surprised the manager the most full-back Andy Robertson.

The former Queen’s Park player on Friday named the SPFL Player of the Month for November had a couple of chances early in his United career but fluffed his lines.

Now though the 19-year-old’s confidence is sky high as he showed by the way he took his two goals against Kilmarnock in the cup last Friday night.

McNamara said: “We have a lot of options going forward. I think that’s five lads scored five goals this year which for me is really pleasing. Armstrong has five, Mackay-Steven, Gauldy, Nadir and of course our left-back!

“I’d like to say it was something I banked on when I signed him but it is still a great bonus for Andrew.

“I think at the start of the season he had a couple of chances but he got a bit of a nose bleed. But now he is confident and has scored a few good goals for us.

“The boys practise their finishing with Darren (coach Jackson) a lot but it’s not something you expect from your full-back.

“It is really refreshing but I am equally happy with the defensive side of his game.”

Another player just one short of joining the famous five club is on-loan Blackburn striker David Goodwillie.

The United Scottish Cup-winning hero has had only had limited chances to shine recently with Ciftci establishing himself as the No.1 front man at the club.

Goodwillie’s deal at Tannadice ends next month and McNamara says he has yet to make a decision on whether to try to extend the player’s stay.

The manager said: “His loan is up in the second week of January. I haven’t decided what to do about it. We have a lot of games coming up and everybody is needed.

“I thought he did well when he came on against Kilmarnock and looked sharp so hopefully he will push for a starting place.”
