Dundee United boss says Andy Robertson is ready for international call

Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara is backing Andy Robertson to answer his country’s call if it comes.

The Tannadice left-back is being strongly tipped to win his first cap when Scotland play Poland in a friendly next month.

Walking out in Warsaw wearing dark blue would be an incredible achievement for a player who was turning out for Queen’s Park in Scotland’s fourth tier less than a year ago.

McNamara said: “Andy is ready for a Scotland call-up and, if he gets one I think he will handle it no problem.

“He has stepped up to everything so far so I would have no doubts about him at all. Indeed, he is as good as anyone in the left-back area.

“That is a position Scotland have up for grabs because a few people have been vying for it in recent years.

“He has trained with Scotland before. I spoke to Gordon (Strachan) after that and he said Andy was excellent.

“What they have seen at Scotland level is no different to what we see day in, day out here at United.”

McNamara can speak with some authority on the subject of Scotland breakthroughs, having made his debut for his country at the tender age of 22.

The first of his 33 caps came in Latvia in a 2-0 win for the Scots in October 1996, with United coach Darren Jackson getting the crucial second goal.

“I was 22 when I got my first call up so was old compared to Andy.” he joked.

“It’s a great experience to get a call-up. I went into the squad for a game with Austria but didn’t play and then made my debut against Latvia a month later.

“I came on as a sub at left-back in a World Cup qualifier.

“We had a lot of good senior players, guys like Colin Calderwood, Stuart McCall, Ally McCoist, Tom Boyd, Tosh McKinlay and Colin Hendry. There was a lot of experience in that squad and that helped.”

Moving back to club business, as United prepare for Saturday’s visit of Kilmarnock, McNamara revealed keeper Rado Cierzniak sat out training on Tuesday.

“Rado is still feeling his thigh but we are hoping he will be fine later in the week,” he said.

“Stuart Armstrong has a sore calf and that’s why we took him off during the St Mirren match but hopefully he will be fine as well.”
