Dundee United go Dutch at end of German tour

Dundee United will have a third trialist in their ranks when they play the second and final match of the German leg of their pre-season tour against Energie Cottbus tonight.

Dutch defender Ismo Vorstermans is the latest to join the club on trial.

The centre-back is a free agent, having left FC Utrecht.

Vorstermans, 24, has spent the last 18 months on loan with fellow Eredivisie club VVV Venlo, playing 10 league games last campaign.

Formerly on the books of Ajax as a youngster, he made 22 appearances for VVV in 2011/12 and played 17 times for Utrecht since making his debut in 2010.

Manager Jackie McNamara confirmed the Dutchman will figure in the clash with the Bundesliga Division Two side in his search to bolster his options in central defence.

He said: “We have Dillo and Gavin Gunning to come back but I’d like one more too. Getting Gavin back will be like a new signing for me because he only played in one game before his injury.

“He’s been given the green light to start training again so it’s just a case of building up his fitness now.”

The Tangerines boss stressed he will be continuing to assess the other two trialists in their squad.

“Whereas last Sunday’s game against Union Berlin was all about giving everyone game time, the emphasis tonight will be on having a good look at Ismo, as well as Graham Carey and Nadir Ciftci.”

United can expect a very similar test to last weekend’s, because this evening’s hosts finished just one place below 1 FC Union, who were 4-1 winners over United.
