Peace talks are being sought by Dundee United supporters after the club called the police in the wake of criticism of chairman Stephen Thompson’s performance.
The Tangerines chief has also cut off all talks with the Federation of Dundee United Supporters Clubs after its chairman, Scott Innes, sent him a string of “aggressive” messages.
He rubbished the chairman’s performance, claimed fans were turning from him and branded him “a pathetic individual” who should stay out of Dundee.
Dundee United sought advice from Police Scotland in the wake of the comments in the belief that they were “of an aggressive nature in terms of their content and tone”.
Thompson described them as “unacceptable” and said this view was shared by the club’s board, senior management team and advisers.
The federation has since said its chairman acted “out of frustration” and has promised that the sending of personal messages will end.
In a statement, a spokesman for the federation said they hoped supporters and club could put the matter behind them and move forward to have the “positive working relationship” both seek.
“We are aware the current situation is dividing opinion among the support but please be rest assured all we seek and all we have ever sought is open, balanced and truthful dialogue with our Club and clarity on the chairman’s plans for Dundee United including financial projections, going forward,” they said.
In a letter to the federation, Mr Thompson outlined the personal messages he had been sent by Mr Innes, which he said were “not conducive to a positive working relationship between our organisations”.
It’s understood they relate to concerns over the team’s recent performance, sale of key players ans lack of top signings.
He said examples of correspondence included:“Tick tock!! Face the music. Fans hate you now!!” (sent 16 August) “Proved correct all along. Please don’t come back to Dundee. Pathetic individual.” (sent 21 August) “Did you notice today how much you’ve lost the fans. Must worry you. Thing is its only gonna get worse for you. Tick Tock.” (Sent 22 August).Mr Thompson told the federation: “Like most clubs, we seek a positive working relationship with our fan representatives and productive communications channels are key to that.
“However with correspondence such as this coming from your chairman, you will understand that we cannot facilitate any further meetings between our organisations until the matter is resolved.”
