Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara will be free to lead the team out at the William Hill Scottish Cup final against St Johnstone on May 17 after withdrawing his appeal.

McNamara was last week handed a five-game touchline ban from the SFA two of which were suspended as punishment for his conduct during the Tangerines’ home game against Saints on March 12.

After some deliberation, United decided to appeal the decision, thereby allowing their boss to take his usual place for the cup semi-final win over Rangers at Ibrox last Saturday.

The fear was he would miss the final were the ban to subsequently be upheld, but now the three games can be served away to Saints, at home to Motherwell the following weekend and then in the match at Inverness on May 3.

A club statement confirmed: “Following telephone advice to the Scottish FA earlier this week, Dundee United has now withdrawn its appeal relating to the ruling of the disciplinary hearing in respect of manager Jackie McNamara.”

It added: “We firmly believe that there are solid grounds to appeal the sentence imposed.

“However, having given the matter further thought and as no hearing date has yet been fixed, we now believe it is in the best interests of all concerned to accept the sentence imposed and withdraw the appeal.”
