Jackie McNamara says Dundee United will avoid panic buys

Dundee UNited boss Jackie McNamara has insisted that panic buying of players is definitely not on his to-do list as he prepares a squad for next season’s assault on the SPL.

The Tannadice manager has revealed he is chasing a number of signing targets this summer but maintains any players being brought in will have to be the right fit for the club moving forward.

McNamara has already secured the services of Partick pair Paul Paton and Chris Erskine and Raith Rovers striker Brian Graham ahead of the new season, while Queen’s Park teenagers Andrew Robertson and Aidan Connolly have also joined the club on two-year deals.

More new faces are likely, particularly after the departure of Johnny Russell for Derby, but McNamara has urged supporters to snap up season tickets as soon as possible to help bolster his budget.

Speaking after United’s decision to extend the loyalty period deadline for season tickets, the United boss said: “I would like to personally thank the United supporters for the loyalty they have shown so far in buying their season tickets.

“This is the single biggest act they can do at this time in helping me to bring in the type of player that will improve and strengthen the team for next season.

“I still want to add to my squad and I have a number of targets lined up.”

And McNamara had a special message for anyone swaying over whether or not to buy a season ticket.

“With around seven weeks until the start of the season, I will not rush out and bring in players just for the sake of it merely to encourage sales during this loyalty period, nor will I spend more than the club can afford,” he stressed.

“It is important that the right players are brought in and that these are properly funded.

“However, I will continue to pursue players who will excite next season and help build a structure and an ethos which will enhance Dundee United for years to come.

“I would like to have my squad settled for pre-season but I am prepared to go beyond that if it means getting the players I want for the club.

“Buying season tickets now is crucial in helping me achieve these goals.”
