McNamara hoping ‘different class’ John Rankin will extend Dundee United contract

Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara is cautiously optimistic that the club are edging closer to persuading John Rankin to sign a new deal.
The 30-year-old has produced a series of star performances in the Tangerines’ engine room this season but is out of contract in the summer.
Rankin, who scored the wonder goal that sealed victory against Kilmarnock at the weekend, has been carefully weighing up his options but his manager is hoping he will now opt to stay at Tannadice.
McNamara said: “We want to get it sorted, for both parties. Hopefully we can come to an agreement because it would be good for John and for ourselves for the next few years.
“I am more positive. Speaking to John, he is comfortable about the situation but obviously he has an important decision to make about his future.
“If you look at his fitness and attitude, he has been different class for us.”
