Dundee United striker Nadir Ciftci reported back for pre-season training as Wigan continued to lead the race for his signature.

The Latics have had a bid worth £1 miilion-plus accepted by the Tangerines and Ciftci’s representative Pierre van Hooijdonk held talks with the English League One side yesterday.

While Van Hooijdonk was busy dealing with Wigan, his client was at United’s St Andrews base as the squad returned from their summer break.

The switch isn’t a done deal yet and the Turk can still say he doesn’t fancy moving to the DW Stadium.

There continues to be interest from Celtic, despite their £900,000 offer having been thrown out by United on Tuesday, but Wigan remain favourites to land him.

Meanwhile, United have handed German goalie Luis Zwick a two-year professional contract after originally registering him an an amateur.

The 21-year-old now joins Michal Szromnik and Marc McCallum in the fight to take over from Rado Cierzniak.

Tannadice goalkeeping coach Craig Hinchliffe said, “Luis fully deserves his contract.

“He is an excellent technical goalkeeper a modern goalkeeper if you like, fantastic with the ball at his feet and has proved he has the mental strength to succeed.

“He is one of three goalkeepers at the club who have the opportunity to prove they merit the first-team goalkeeper’s jersey.

“We have chosen to not give out the ‘1’ squad number because we have three goalkeepers all capable of playing in the Scottish Premiership and over pre-season one will prove to me they deserve the jersey.”

A delighted Zwick said: “I have worked very hard to show my ability and I am delighted and proud to sign as a professional for United.

“I have improved greatly in my time here and was aware that continued hard work and playing well would see an opportunity to move into the first team squad.

“My target is to now play games, continue my development and make an effort to secure the goalkeeper’s jersey for the first team.”
