Scottish Cup final: Mark Wilson wants chance to banish painful memories

The 2005 Scottish Cup final was a day to forget for Mark Wilson (second left) and Dundee United team-mates.
The 2005 Scottish Cup final was a day to forget for Mark Wilson (second left) and Dundee United team-mates.

Mark Wilson is desperate to be selected for this month’s Scottish Cup final to help exorcise the demons from the last time he was at the showpiece occasion with Dundee United.

Back in 2005, the defender was in Gordon Chisholm’s starting XI that lost to Celtic at Hampden thanks to a solitary Alan Thompson goal.

Now at United for his second spell with the club, Wilson is determined to experience cup final joy against St Johnstone on May 17.

However, he admits that he has no idea if present boss Jackie McNamara will give him the nod or opt for his season-long rival for the right-back jersey, Keith Watson.

Wilson said: “I’m thriving on the rivalry between Keith and myself. Competition is always healthy at any club. Obviously I want to play every game but I’m at the stage of my career now where I know that’s not going to be possible.

“Keith’s had his injury problems as well over the years so we actually bounce off each other quite well.”

Wilson added: “It would be brilliant to play in the cup final it’s what you want to do as a kid.

“I’ve been lucky enough to play in a few in my career. But it would be special being back with United because that’s where I first got a taste for it.

“It was a disappointing day back in 2005 because we lost and it was raining I don’t look back too fondly on it. But it was still great to get there.

“Hopefully this time we’ll have a nice sunny day at Celtic Park and we’ll take the trophy home with us.”
