Brechin boss Darren Dods hoping for change in fortunes

Brechin boss Darren Dods is looking to take a step back in order to move the club forward.

The 41-year-old has had an incredibly tough start to his managerial career with City having lost all six of their competitive matches so far.

Dods inherited a threadbare squad and has been playing catch-up ever since to increase his options.

Injuries have meant that the veteran defender has had to continue playing when ideally, he would have liked to concentrate fully on his management role.

Now, there may be light at the end of the tunnel on that score ahead of today’s trip to Stranraer.

Dods said: “It has been an extremely difficult start to my managerial career.

“So I have been taking as much advice as I can. For instance, we had a bounce game against Falkirk and I was speaking to Alex Smith who has obviously been there and done it for a lot of years.

“To be honest, I am finding combining playing and managing difficult.

“I feel my own form is dipping as I am trying to do so much.

“Ideally, I would have liked to have taken a step back but Ross Perry and Paul McLean have been injured so there has been no-one else to cover at centre-half and I have had to play.

He added: “We tried to bring a young defender in on loan earlier this week and it looked like the deal would be done but his manager changed his mind.

“Thankfully, though, Ross managed to train on Thursday so fingers crossed he will be all right for the Stranraer game and I can take a backward step.

“I cannot fault the lads’ attitude and effort in training and we just need to take that high tempo into games.

“Unfortunately, we have been losing goals and in this league once you go behind, teams sit in.

“Hopefully, we can change that on Saturday and get a good result against Stranraer.”

McLean will be missing again however goalie Graeme Smith returns from suspension.
