Montrose confirm Paul Hegarty is staying on as boss

Montrose have confirmed that Paul Hegarty is the club’s new permanent manager.

The Dundee United legend took over after the Gable Endies parted company with former boss George Shields in February.

Hegarty was put in charge until the end of the season and was tasked with preserving Montrose’s SPFL status, something he achieved earlier this month thanks to an aggregate victory over Brora Rangers in the historic first pyramid play-off final.

He had indicated that he would like to take over on a permanent basis but matters were complicated by the sudden passing of his mother two weeks ago.

Now though, Hegarty will start preparations in earnest for next season along with his assistant John Holt.

Montrose chairman Derek Sim said last night: “I am absolutely delighted that Paul and John have agreed to stay on.

“I was always confident they would. They did a great job keeping us in the SPFL and they now begin work to ensure we do not find ourselves in such a precarious position again.”
