Glenavon 1 St Johnstone 1: Saints denied warm-up win by ‘home decision’

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright said a 'home decision' saw the hosts awarded a penalty in the friendly.
St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright said a 'home decision' saw the hosts awarded a penalty in the friendly.

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright suspects a dodgy refereeing decision cost Saints another win on Irish soil.

The Perth side were set for a confidence-boosting victory over a robust Glenavon side, courtesy of Chris Kane’s second half strike.

But a last ditch spot-kick saw the Irish side claim a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw in Lurgan.

It looked like Irish player manager Gary Hamilton had taken a dive to win the award and Wright said: “From where I was sitting it looked like a home refereeing decision.

“It was a physical game and it was what we expected because they are a direct side and cause teams problems with balls into the box.

“We caused ourselves bother but tightened up in the second half and looked good value for a win.

“Taking on two games back-to-back gave us an opportunity to give most of the squad a run out.

“The trip over has served its purpose.

“Our training facilities have been excellent and we’ve made the most of them.

“Obviously the lads needed games before the Europa League trip to Armenia and we have another one lined up against Aberdeen on Sunday which will provide a different sort of test.

“Inevitably you have one or two players with niggles at this stage of the season, even if the break has been a short one this summer.

“We have to be careful with them.”
