St Johnstone aim to tie-up Danny Swanson deal

Will Danny Swanson be celebrating signing for Saints?
Will Danny Swanson be celebrating signing for Saints?

St Johnstone will hope to sign Danny Swanson today for a second time.

The Perth club were working late into the night in an attempt to spend some of the Michael O’Halloran transfer money.

They explored a number of options and Swanson was at the top of the wish list.

The time pressure of sealing his transfer was lifted by Hearts announcing his release last night.

As a free agent, Swanson can now sign for Saints (or anybody else) after the window has shut.

The former Dundee United man arrived on loan from Coventry City 12 months ago, and joined Hearts in September.

He has struggled to break into Robbie Neilson’s side, however.

Saints were reported to be making enquiries about Sheffield United midfielder Stefan Scougall, with Hibs also said to be interested in the former Livingston player.

Meanwhile, Saints chairman Steve Brown was satisfied with the numbers involved in the O’Halloran deal.

There has been no official confirmation of the fee but it is understood Rangers met the Perth club’s £500,000 valuation with their third bid.

Brown said: “It became clear Michael was keen on moving to Rangers if the clubs could agree a fee.

“As a club St Johnstone look to attract players who are ambitious and Michael played a key role in bringing the Scottish Cup to Perth for the first time in 2014.

“When Rangers met our valuation of the player it would have been wrong to stand in his way.

“This took longer than anticipated so we are delighted it has finally been sorted out.”

Liam Caddis was released earlier in the day.

Wright said: “I’m disappointed because I do think there’s a lot in Liam. He’s a player I trusted and played in some big games in Europe, and started him at Celtic Park.

“He’s had limited opportunities and probably by his own admission, hasn’t quite done enough. It’s better for him to be free and able to find a club in this window rather than in the summer.”

Gareth Rodger is another departure after he too negotiated his release. The young centre-back has signed for League One Forfar.
