St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright looking to build on Rangers result

St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright admits he is looking for his players to build on Tuesday night’s famous win against Rangers at Ibrox and embark on a consistent run of success.

Saints stunned the Light Blues in Glasgow, winning 3-1 to march on into the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

The McDiarmid manager was obviously delighted with the result and performance but he is now looking for more of the same from his side in the Premiership, starting tomorrow against Jackie McNamara’s Dundee United.

Wright said: “We move on but Tuesday’s result should give the lads belief to go on a wee run.

“We have to take that 90-minute performance into the games coming up.

“It is nice to get the win against a very good side that everyone has been talking about this season and the supporters will have enjoyed it.

“But it’s gone now, we move on and the main focus is a derby with United.

“Tuesday night can’t win Saturday’s game for us but a performance like we put in at Ibrox can.

He added: “There has been a lack of consistency about us and our defending as a team so far. That is why we have been getting up and down results. We have to put that right.

“In nine games we have scored something like 17 or 18 goals. I am pleased with the chances we are creating and how clinical we have been but the little mistakes have to be eradicated.

“We did that the other night. Scoring three goals at Ibrox was a big plus but how we defended was massive. It gave us a platform to win the game.

“I am pleased United also had a tough game in midweek.

“It can be hard playing against a fresh team who were resting up.

“There should be a decent crowd and a good derby atmosphere. That will give us another lift.

“We have had a good record against United and of course we want to keep it going but that counts for nothing going into this game. The past has no relevance to this match. Jackie’s squad has changed and so has ours.”

On-loan Celtic defender Darnell Fisher missed the game at Ibrox through injury but he will return against United.

Wright said: “Darnell will come back in and we have no other injury worries.

“We made changes for Tuesday even on the bench to cover all bases and it shows the strength of the squad. Some will miss out this weekend but that is the way it has to be and the players realise that.”
