St Johnstone make penalty taker change

St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright has confirmed that Steven MacLean has been relieved of penalty kick duties.

And Liam Craig is likely to replace him.

Saints’ top scorer has now missed two spot-kicks in recent weeks – one at Tannadice and the other on Saturday against Hearts.

“Macca won’t be taking the penalties from now on,” Wright said.

“I have spoken to him about it and told him that we’ll be making a change.

“What you have to remember is that he’s scored plenty of them as well, and he’s having a great season.

“But I think it’s time for a change and I don’t think he wants to stay on them now anyway.

“We’ve had a few different players on them over the years and I think Liam Craig will likely step back into doing it.”

Reflecting on Saturday’s draw against 10-man Hearts, Wright said: “The big positive thing for me is that we are still creating a lot of chances.

“We should have won the game on Saturday, no question about that and on another day we would have.

“But I would be more worried if we were not creating the openings.

“So there were positives to take from it, even though we didn’t get the three points we wanted.

“We need goals from all over the team, Murray Davidson had some great chances against Hearts but the goalkeeper made a good save.

“The goals will come for Muzz, no doubt about that.”

Chris Millar should be fit for the Boxing Day clash with Partick Thistle, Wright reported.

“Chris trained one day last week but we decided not to risk him,” he said.

“He’s fully fit again, all his tests have been good so with David Wotherspoon’s suspension we wanted to keep him back.

“If we were not going to play him there’s no point having him on the bench, because you’d have to bring him on.

“So Chris was left out for his own good and that of the team.”
