St Johnstone on the verge of signing new midfielder

St Johnstone have got a good chance of signing a new left-sided midfielder by the time the week is out.

Perth boss Tommy Wright is hopeful of closing a deal before Saturday’s clash with Aberdeen, and he is also working on bolstering his attacking options.

And if he does bring a new forward on board, it will be an experienced pro rather than a promising youngster.

A French player starts a trial spell but the Saints manager is reluctant to settle for raw potential, with Adam Morgan, 20, already drafted in on loan from Yeovil.

Wright said: “We need a striker in and I have been consistent on that score since the end of last season.

“It’s not ideal timing because there aren’t many available who fit the bill. But we are working hard on it.

“I could have got a couple of 18-year-old players up from Premier League clubs in England last week but that’s not what we need.

“While they may go on to prove themselves good players, we really need someone with game-time and experience.

“Premier League teams tend to want their better players out on loan to the Championship. If it means playing another young striker I’d rather we went with our own in the shape of Chris Kane, although ideally he would get a chance to go on loan again to the Championship up here for a few months.

“But I am hopeful of getting a left sided midfielder in over the next few days.”
