St Johnstone’s Murray Davidson keeping celebration secret

St Johnstone’s Murray Davidson keeping celebration secret

He will not reveal his reasons for celebrating the way he did but Murray Davidson makes absolutely no secret about the fact his goal against Rangers on Tuesday night at Ibrox was the best of his St Johnstone career.

The midfielder’s counter set Saints on their way to a stunning 3-1 League Cup victory over a side who had started the tie as firm favourites in the eyes of the bookies.

After putting the ball into the back of the net, Davidson raised his head and hands to the heavens however he was staying tight-lipped over his reasons for the gesture.

He said: “The celebration pointing to the sky after my goal stays a secret.

“But that goal has to be the best of the 25 I have scored for Saints, because of its importance in a big cup tie.

“It has been a long time since I scored and to get such a vital goal meant a lot to me.

“It is right up there because it put us on the way in a big cup tie. Long may it continue.

“At that stage we had been struggling to get up the park and keep the ball. But we grew in confidence and built a massive threat from there.

“It is important we chip in with goals throughout the squad. Liam Craig, Simon Lappin and now myself have all got goals from midfield.”

Davidson’s close-range finish against Rangers was the conclusion of a fine move involving a cut-back from Michael O’Halloran and a superb flick assist from Steven MacLean.

And the midfielder revealed the goal was memorable in more ways than one.

He added: “I don’t really remember the previous two times I played at Ibrox because I was concussed in both of them. Twice I have been in the hospital along the road. At least I remember this one and I will have fond memories of the match.

“It was a great set-up by Macca.

“Before the game I reminded myself that if Mikey got the ball I would hit the six-yard box and it was a superb touch from Macca. I gave him a shout and it was perfect. He has great awareness and it was an easy task to tuck it away.

“We have been inconsistent so far this season which is frustrating.

“At home though we have been looking strong so now we have to build on that against Dundee United. We should take confidence from the cup win for what is another massive game.

“It is up to us to put back-to-back wins together for the first time this season.”
