St Johnstone defender Steven Anderson was just as happy keeping goals out as putting one in as they beat Partick Thistle.
Anderson grabbed Saints’ second in a 2-0 win over the Jags at McDiarmid Park on Saturday, adding to fellow backline boy Dave Mackay’s early opener.
He rose highest to head home a David Wotherspoon corner on 49 minutes but he was as pleased to keep a clean sheet as be on the scoresheet.
“The onus should be on the strikers to score but the defenders have chipped in,” said Anderson.
“We were leading the way, you could say.
“But our main job is to get a clean sheet and we’ve done that so I’m as happy with that as the goal.
“It was a good ball in from David Wotherspoon and I normally run to the back post but this time I went to the front and I got a bit lucky.
“That meant we had a goal at the start of the first half (from Mackay) and the start of the second so it was the ideal way to start both halves.
“The first one was a bit lucky, if we’re being honest.
“I thought it had gone out for a corner so there was a delayed reaction before we celebrated.
“But you need that kind of luck in football sometimes.
“Dave didn’t celebrate his goal, he just laughed.
“I don’t think he realised how big a deflection there was until it hit the net.
“Overall, it was a good result for us.”
Saints, who are sitting sixth in the Premiership, head north to Inverness tomorrow night.
They are definitely looking up the table rather than down, despite trailing fifth-placed Hamilton Accies by seven points and ICT by nine.
“We want to finish in the top six and want to improve every year,” said Anderson.
“Last season we finished sixth and we would like to better that this campaign.
“Inverness are a very good side and we will need to be at our very best if we are to get anything from the game.”
