David Goodwillie is at the right place to get his career back on track, according to St Johnstone Scottish Cup hero Steven Anderson.
The Perth centre-back was delighted to see Goodwillie join up with the squad for pre-season training at Stirling University this week, and he believes the Scotland international would be an excellent addition to the dressing room.
Anderson said Saints would be as good for him as he would be for Saints.
The pair go back to their days at Tannadice, and Goodwillie has also proved to be a tough opponent for the McDiarmid Park defender.
“I was the year above Goodwillie when he came in as a kid,” Anderson said. “He did really well and got his big move to England.
“If he does come here I think he will have a point to prove. That could benefit him. The boys know him and will back him all the way.
“There are some similarities between the way he plays and Stevie May.
“Mayso and Steven MacLean were on fire for us last season but with Nigel Hasselbaink leaving we need another striker.
“You never know what will happen with Mayso. He could move on. He is different class. So the gaffer has to be prepared for anything.
“The gaffer sees bringing in another striker as the top priority right now and Goodie coming in would be a real boost. He has a great pedigree and he scores goals. He knows the league well and he is a good lad.
“He had a great partnership at United with Jon Daly and here we have Macca and Mayso. But it would be good having Goodie in for the Europa League games.
“It is a great environment to come and work. I was a nobody when I came here to be honest and Saints gave me a platform and a chance to play every week. If he comes here and scores goals for us he will be noticed and you never know what
happens from there.”
The close season has been shorter for the Saints players than most other Premiership clubs, but it’s far from a hardship as far as Anderson and his team-mates are concerned.
“The summer break was even shorter than usual because we won the cup. But you are in the game to win things and there are no complaints from us and we’re looking forward to Europe again.”
