Sutton already making his mark for Saints

John Sutton.
John Sutton.

John Sutton made an impressive Premiership debut for St Johnstone against Hearts.

But Perth boss Tommy Wright believes Sutton’s team-mates can bring even more out of the former Motherwell and Hearts striker in the weeks ahead.

“We got John high up the pitch and got the ball wide,” Wright said.

“I felt our corners in particular were poor, and some of our delivery from open play, but we showed that if we can get good quality in the box for him he’ll feed off that.

“He links up the play well. I think he worked very well with Michael, who we managed to get down the sides a few times. He was a real handful.”

The fact that both Sutton and fellow new centre-forward Graham Cummins are both up-and-running with goals scored, was a big bonus for Wright.

“I’m really pleased that the two of them got off the mark,” he said. “And I’m pleased that we scored three goals.

“After getting over the disappointment of the match we have to realise that there were lots of positives to take forward.

“We played some decent football at times. We went a bit more direct when we had to and were chasing the game.

“We got quality into the box decent supply for Sutton and Cummins.

“There was a concern after last season that we wouldn’t score enough goals. So from that point of view it was certainly a good start.

“There is still room for improvement in attack but the biggest area of improvement needed is obviously at the back.”

Meanwhile, Dave Mackay and Murray Davidson both played 45 minutes for the under-20s on Tuesday night as planned.
