THE ST ANDREWS Links Junior Golf Association is looking for volunteers to help hone the next generation of top players from the home of golf, writes Steve Scott.
SALJGA, formed 11 years ago with Open champion Paul Lawrie as patron, has introduced thousands of children who live or attend school in St Andrews to the game, running coaching courses and competitions for all abilities and ages.
The association has developed two young players picked for Great Britain at this winter’s Australian Youth Olympics, Euan Scott (St Andrews) and Lauren Whyte (St Regulus).
Now the association need more volunteers not necessarily from St Andrews to help building on their success.
SALJGA junior golf coordinator Nick Randerson said: “We’re looking for enthusiastic golfers who are willing to commit to coaching SALJGA members.
“This will be for a one hour session, one night a week for 10 weeks, between mid-April and late June.”
Volunteers will get a PGA Level One coaching certificate by being involved.
“Volunteers become part of a fantastic existing team,” Nick added.
“They will all work under the guidance of PGA professionals to introduce the basics of golf to children aged primarily between seven and 10 who are relatively new to the game of golf.
“Our volunteers do not need to be expert golfers but we want people who are keen to help and impart knowledge.”
