St Andrews youngster making Dunhill impact

Local amateur Keith Bowman has made such an impact in the Dunhill Links team event that the organisers decided he should be playing off the same tees as the pros.

The 16-year-old from St Andrews is partnered with Paul Dunne.

And the Irishman, who is just one shot off the lead in the main event, revealed that his side-kick was told to play with big boys on the Old Course yesterday after his impressive exploits at Kingsbarns the day before.

“After we had a good round yesterday they made him play off the championship tees rather than the amateur ones,” Dunne said. “I think he was the only one.

“We shot 60 yesterday so maybe they were trying to even the playing field. It’s a strange one. We weren’t even leading.

“That was a bit of a surprise. Hopefully they can let him play off the amateur tees at Carnoustie so we can get a few birdies.

“He’s hitting a lot of good shots but it’s hard to make birdies from the back tees. We had a good day today, hopefully we can have another one tomorrow.”

Bowman is understandably revelling in the opportunity that has been given to him.

He said: “Allianz are a global partner of the St Andrews Links Trust and they kindly donated a spot to the Links and the Links nominated me.

“It’s been really good. Playing with one of the leaders has been a great experience, and playing front of these crowds.

“I’ve not played too bad myself. The top 20 teams get through to Sunday and we’re there or thereabouts. It’s one step at a time but it would be great if we made it through to Sunday and were in one of the last groups.”

He added: “Paul’s a really impressive player and a very nice guy as well. He’s six years older than me. I’d love to be where he is in six years. He’s a really good role model.”

The full-time golf student is continuing a family tradition in the Dunhill.

He explained: “Ewan Scott (a leading amateur golfer) is caddying for me this week. He played in 2012 and my dad (Ewan) played in 2007. It’s great that three members of one family have played it.”
