Aalborg Pirates praise ‘classy hosts’ Fife Flyers

Stars goaltender Mark Cheverie snuffs out a Capitals attack in Saturdays meeting in Dundee.
Stars goaltender Mark Cheverie snuffs out a Capitals attack in Saturdays meeting in Dundee.

The silverware is heading overseas in the Bay Hotel Challenge as Fife Flyers lost 8-3 to Danish side Aalborg Pirates on Sunday night at Kirkcaldy.

Flyers, who won Saturday’s meeting 4-2, were 4-0 down after 15 minutes but hit back to be only 4-3 behind after 35 minutes.

The tourists then fired four unanswered goals to take the trophy 10-7 on aggregate.

Todd Dutiaume, Flyers’ coach, said: “We were physically tired but we tried some things, different positions.

“We take positives from this and these games will go a long way to helping us shape our game.”

Paul Thompson, Aalborg’s coach, and the ex-coach to Great Britain, said: “We want to thank the Fife Flyers organisation and ownership for being fantastic, professional and, above all, classy hosts.”

Matt Reber, who only jetted in from North America 24 hours before, was the star in the first meeting, the razor-sharp hitman bagging two goals.

Jordan Fulton opened Flyers’ account after six minutes and Reber’s double put the home side 3-1 ahead after 43 minutes.

Tommy Grant pulled one back for the visitors with less than four minutes left before former Braehead Clan forward Bobby Chaumont secured the win with an empty net goal with 12 seconds left.

Rene Jarolin made an immediate impact on his comeback to Edinburgh Capitals last night after missing a year to stay in Europe because of his family.

The 32-year-old Slovakian netted after 15 minutes of a tight game at Murrayfield against Dundee Stars.

Capitals, who shocked Stars 4-2 on Tayside on Saturday, held out until 38 seconds from time, when American-born defenceman Kevin Quick hit the rigging to spare the blushes of Stars’ player/coach Jeff Hutchins, a former Edinburgh player.

On Saturday American debutant Greg Collins fired a double as low-budget Capitals sunk the Stars. Assistant player/coach Matt Ryan and John Mitchell netted the home side’s goals.

Paul Guilcher and Grant Reekie scored to give Dundee Tigers a welcome 2-0 win over Dundee Comets in their opening Autumn Cup clash last night.

Evergeen Guilcher netted after 14 minutes and Reekie scored with less than seven minutes left on the clock.

Both sides fired 35 shots on goal in a game where both sides showed signs of rustiness.

Elsewhere, more than 2,000 fans watched as under-strength Braehead Clan retained their grip on the Aladdin Cup with a storming performance in last night’s second leg against Italian cracks Asiago.

The Glasgow side, beaten 3-1 on their own ice on Saturday, were 1-0 down after the opening session.

But they scored two unanswered goals in the middle period to lead 2-1 and finished off Asiago, coached by former Ayr Scottish Eagles star John Parco, and beaten 4-3 in Dundee on Friday night, by winning 5-2 on the night for a 6-5 aggregate.

Bay Hotel Challenge, second-leg: Fife Flyers 3 Aalborg Pirates (Denmark) 8 (agg 7-10).
