Angus racer Sandy Mitchell was on blistering “home” form to stretch his Super One British karting championship lead.
The Dundee High School youngster arrived at the latest round of the series at Larkhall in Lanarkshire, confidence brimming after a storming clean-sweep performance in the previous Buckmore Park outing and picked up where he left off.
Although Larkhall is the only Scottish round on the championship calendar, it is one of the UK circuits where Sandy has raced least but that proved to be no barrier to putting himself at the sharp end of a big entry in the junior max class against rivals from home and abroad.
After qualifying fifth overall, Sandy took third and first in qualifying heats and then a third in the first final of the day, fought in tricky conditions after a summer shower swamped the technical West of Scotland Kart Club circuit.
The weekend highlight for the Angus teenager and the RL Racing team crew he competes with came in the televised final, when Sandy caught his rivals napping with a scintillating start, which set up a lights-to-flag run from the front, popping in the fastest lap of the race.
Sandy’s success has stretched his Super One Series championship lead to 74 points as the six-round title chase heads into its second half at Glan Y Gors in Wales at the beginning of next month.
“It was a great weekend and I’d like to thank all at RL Racing, Cream Racing Engines, Smartcomm, Stirfresh, SGM Distribution and Tunnocks,” said Sandy, last year’s driver of the year in the Arden International Young Racing Driver Academy, a programme for young talent.
