Dundee Stars stung by late Hull Stingrays blast

Hull Stingrays defend an attack from Dundee Stars Matt Ryan and Shane Lust in last nights clash at Dundee Ice Arena.

Jordan Mayer claimed the game-winner 17 seconds into overtime as Hull Stingrays came from behind to mug Dundee Stars 5-4 last night.

It looked as if coach Jeff Hutchins would be celebrating after Saturday’s disappointing 4-0 Elite Ice Hockey League reverse at Coventry Blaze.

The home side led 4-3 before Zach Hervato scored the game-tying goal 15 seconds from the final whistle and Mayer’s second of the night secured two points.

Earlier, home fans were stunned when Carl Lauzon scorred in the first 37 seconds for the visitors. John Mitchell pulled Stars level but Hervato put Hull ahead for a second time after seven minutes.

The Humberside squad held out until former Edinburgh Capitals forward Martin Cingel scored after 23 minutes.

Bari McKenzie fired Stars ahead on the power play 11 minutes later only for Mayer to equalise. Former Braehead Clan hitman Shane Lust was then in the right place at the right time 39 seconds later to put the Dundee team ahead 4-3.

Stars held on until 15 seconds from time when centreman Hervato popped in Hull’s fourth to silence Stars fans and take the game into overtime.

Then Mayer took centre stage.

Fife Flyers’ unhappy start to the season continued on Sunday night when they were thrashed at Sheffield Steelers. Doubles from Michael Forney and Colton Fetter helped sink the Kirkcaldy club 8-1 at Ice Sheffield.

Bobby Chaumont claimed Fife’s consolation.

The victory came despite Steelers’ Mark Thomas missing the game for a “dangerous and reckless” hit on Fife’s associate player-coach Danny Stewart in Saturday’s 5-4 penalty-shot victory over the Fifers at Rosslyn Street.

Last night Flyers’ coach Todd Dutiaume played his two netminders, Kevin Regan letting in five goals in 40 minutes of action and Blair Daly three in his 20 minutes.

Fife were outshot 47-18 over the 60 minutes and Flyers were 3-1 down after the opening 18 minutes with centre ice Fetter opening the scoring after only two minutes.

Left winger Forney made it 2-0 eight minutes later but Chaumont gave Flyers hope when he struck a minute later on the power play.

Sheffield moved up a gear, however, and Fetter popped in number three for the home side after 18 minutes. Steelers then netted twice in the middle session, through Forney and left wing Phil Hill.

Three hit the rigging in nine third-period minutes, with Devin Di Diomete, Jay Latulippe and Gord Baldwin all counting.

Josh Scoon, Chris Auger, Ned Lukacevic and Jordan Fulton scored for Fife in Saturday’s narrow defeat.
