Lou Dickenson the Dundee Stars hero with extra period winner

Lou Dickenson slotted the game-winning penalty shot as Dundee Stars saw off hosts Belfast Giants with a confidence-boosting 3-2 Challenge Cup victory on Sunday night.

The former Edmonton Oilers draft pick found the net in the nerve-jangling extra session after the sides were tied at 2-2 at the end of regular time.

They pair could not be separated after sudden-death overtime and Mike Radja, James Desmarais and Michael Forney missed for Giants with Brandon Benedict converting.

Dickenson slotted Dundee’s opening penalty shot and watched as Curtis Leinweber and Brett Switzer failed with theirs.

Then the 33-year-old skated out of from the bench to score turn a 2-0 deficit from the first period into a win.

Radja had earlier opened the scoring for Giants after four minutes with Derrick Walser making it two in the 18th minute.

Stars hit back with a goal from assistant coach Bobby Chaumont and Justin Faryna slotted the leveller seconds into the final session.
