Service users at a Dundee mental health charity were celebrating in style after becoming published poets.

Talented members of the creative writing group at HaVeN The Hearing Voices Network Dundee unveiled their book of poetry, When The Roots Are Strong, during an official launch party on Wednesday afternoon.

The group, which meets weekly at the charity’s Hilltown premises, aims to encourage service users to write as a form of expression.

After two years of hard work, the group has produced a series of poems on a range of subjects, including Dundee, depression and summer.

Any proceeds raised from selling the book will go towards the creative writing group’s projects.

The Hearing Voices Network Dundee aims to erase the stigma of voice hearers and to enable them to realise their place in a society which knows and understands their plight.

Development officer at the charity’s Dundee branch, Carina Tejerina, said writing poetry was a useful tool for people to convey their emotions.

“I’m very proud to have such an outstanding group of creative writers in our network,” she said.

“Poetry can often help people express themselves.

“Sometimes being creative and writing is a way to try to cope, especially if it can be a struggle for them to speak about the feelings or issues they are facing or going through.

“Writing down how they feel allows them to try to work through it and allows them the chance to express themselves.”

The book is being sold from the charity’s premises at 216-220 Hilltown.
