The 200 people who signed up to support plans for a community centre in Monifieth are being urged to throw their weight behind the fundraising which will be vital to the project’s success.
Though the battle for a centre has been going on for 10 years, there is now a renewed sense of urgency about the project.
The lease on the portable building being used as a community cabin will run out in 2013, by which time Monifieth Community Centre Steering Group must have obtained planning permission and identified funding for its permanent replacement.
Chairwoman Margaret Copland said: ”The project is now gathering momentum and public interest.”
School pupils are to be invited to come up with a logo to be used on the feasibility study for the proposed base.
Architects AIM Design, who are carrying out the study, will run the competition for Monifieth High School pupils.
The study is looking at the needs of the community and how they could be addressed by the centre, as well as investigating the suitability of available sites.
Mrs Copland said there was a good attendance at the steering group’s meeting, which was given a brief presentation on the feasibility study.
She said they are grateful for grants of £8,500 from Awards for All and £5,000 from Angus Council Community Funding towards the cost of the study.
Even so, she stressed the group now needs any help that can be offered by the 200 people who subscribed as members.
A number of events have been organised in the community cabin in the grounds of Invertay House, Maule Street.
A craft fair will be held a week on Saturday from 10am to 5pm, while plans are in the pipeline for a bingo afternoon next month, with all the proceeds of both events going towards funding for the centre.
